The Mike Weir Foundation has become the official charity partner of 2014 GOLFest Nova Scotia

Halifax, Nova Scotia – May 21, 2014 – SportBox Entertainment Group and the PGA TOUR announced today that The Mike Weir Foundation will become the official charity partner of 2014 GOLFest Nova Scotia, with QEII Foundation as the primary local charitable partner and beneficiary.

GOLFest Nova Scotia is a weeklong festival celebrating all things golf in Canada. As the official charity of GOLFest Nova Scotia, the power of The Mike Weir Foundation will be harnessed to drive fundraising and charitable support. Since inception in 2004 and through the support of generous sponsors and donors, The Mike Weir Foundation has raised over $7 million, with over $4 million of support being provided for children’s health care and related causes.

“When my wife Bricia and I started The Mike Weir Foundation our goal was to advance the physical, emotional and educational welfare of children in Canada. Golf is a great platform to build awareness for local and national charities. I look forward to supporting Halifax and the Atlantic Canada region through GOLFest charitable efforts, and to visiting and playing alongside some of the best PGA players in the world in the RBC Canada Cup,” said Mike Weir.

GOLFest and The Mike Weir Foundation will work with the festival’s primary beneficiary, the QEII Foundation, to build and execute initiatives locally. The QEII Foundation touches the lives of all Nova Scotians and inspires generosity to advance health care by working with a community of people who share a vision of better health, strengthening health care and improving the lives of Atlantic Canadians.

Last year, the QEII Foundation raised over $20-million to fund research, professional education, equipment, technology and community-based programs. These much needed funds support primary care such as treatment of chronic conditions, specialized care like cancer treatment, and the most advanced care such as organ transplantation.

“The QEII Foundation is proud to be GOLFest Nova Scotia’s local charity of choice,” said Bill Bean, President and CEO of the QEII Foundation. “This partnership will help further care and truly make a difference for the patients who visit the QEII for rehabilitative care from across Atlantic Canada.”

In addition to the QEII Foundation, GOLFest will also support FEED NOVA SCOTIA and the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame as secondary beneficiaries. GOLFest will work on specific initiatives with each charity that support their mission and campaigns.

FEED NOVA SCOTIA helps provide meals to those in need by collecting and distributing food to more than 150 member agency food banks and meal programs, while eliminating chronic hunger and poverty through research.

The Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame honours, promotes, and preserves the rich sport history of Nova Scotia. In addition to featuring a state-of-the-art sport museum in downtown Halifax, the Hall of Fame provides a province-wide education program that uses the inspirational stories of sport heroes to deliver important lifestyle messages to Nova Scotia youth.

“We are proud to partner with The Mike Weir Foundation and three outstanding local charities,” said Grant MacDonald, Director, GOLFest Nova Scotia. “Our goal with GOLFest is to leave a lasting impact in the community each year. We will be working with our charitable partners over the next several weeks to build engaging initiatives that raise funds in the lead up to and on-site at GOLFest Nova Scotia.”

All charitable funds raised through GOLFest will remain in the local community. GOLFest charitable initiatives will continue to contribute to the substantial impact of the PGA TOUR’s charitable platform. Earlier this year, the PGA TOUR announced that it had surpassed $2 billion in all-time charitable giving. This milestone was reached a mere eight years after the first $1 billion was reached in 2005.

GOLFest Nova Scotia will feature the RBC Canada Cup, the Tour’s Nova Scotia Open and the Junior Canada Cup. In 2014, GOLFest will be held at Ashburn Golf Club – New Course from Monday, June 30 to Sunday, July 6.
