Reigning Canadian Amateur champion Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ont., and Toronto's Albin Choi, the top ranked amateur in Canada, are among the 11 athletes selected to represent Team Canada as part of the 2012 National Amateur Golf Team.
Hughes and Choi are among three returning members on the men's side which also includes former two-time Canadian Junior Boys champion Mitch Sutton of London, Ont. Eric Banks of Truro, N.S., moves up from the 2011 Development Squad and will join newcomers Charlie Hughes of Maple Ridge, B.C. and Garrett Rank of Elmira, Ont.
Rank, a member of the Waterloo Warriors golf team, becomes the second Canadian college player to earn a spot on Team Canada, following in the footsteps of Mitch Evanecz of Red Deer, Alta. in 2011.
Christine Wong of Richmond, B.C. is the lone returning member from the women's team. She will be joined by former Team Canada member Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., who returns to the team after a one year absence. The stresses of college golf coupled with the commitment required to be on Team Canada and her desire to spend more time with her coach Sean Foley led the junior from Alabama to opt out of the team this past year.
A trio of 2011 Development Squad members - Augusta James of Bath, Ont., Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C., and Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont. - will move up to the national team in 2012.
"We are very excited about the group of young men and women selected to participate in the National Amateur Team program and represent Team Canada in 2012," said Jeff Thompson, Golf Canada's Chief Sport Development Officer. "It is our goal to support these players in helping them achieve their goals for excellence within the sport. Whether competing internationally, nationally, provincially or as members of their respective collegiate teams, each of these athletes has earned the right to represent Canada in 2012."
Golf Canada also named a nine member Development Squad team highlighted by 14-year-old Mackenzie Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont. The remaining members of the team include Kevin Kwon of Pitt Meadows, B.C., Adam Svensson of Surrey, B.C., Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alta. and Blair Hamilton of Burlington, Ont. Joining Brooke Henderson on the women's side is Toronto's Anna Kim, Anica Yoo of Port Coquitlam, B.C., Taylor Kim of Surrey, B.C. and Brogan McKinnon of Mississauga, Ont.
The first event for the newly announced squad will be this week's biennial Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship in Texas, a 20 country, 72-hole best ball stroke play championship featuring four-player teams of men and women. Hughes and Rank make up the men's team while Kim and Brooke Henderson will challenge for the women's title.
