April Update – Masters Week
Tue, 09 Apr 2013 09:14:10
I've arrived at one of my favourite tournaments of the year; the Masters, and I'm hoping that come Thursday I'll be able to play.
As many of you may know, I suffered a rib injury while playing at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Since that time, I have been doing all I can to get myself ready for this week. With this type of injury, there's not always a lot you can do to speed up the healing process. I've been resting, taking anti-inflammatory pills and undergoing physio treatments, hoping that things will allow me to swing.
On Monday I took my first full swings since the injury. I hit about 30 or 40 shots on the range and that included everything from wedges to a few drivers. The full swings were only at about 50 per cent of the speed that I normally would swing at, but it felt OK. There wasn't a lot of pain and I was encouraged about that.
Over the next two days, I'll try ramping it up a bit to see if I think I can play. If I don't feel any pain, then I'll probably go ahead. If I feel that I'm doing myself more harm than good, I won't.
The good thing about this tournament is that I can wait until the last minute to make my decision as there aren't any alternates waiting to get in.
However I still want to be very careful. I don't want to do any more harm to my injury and end up starting all over with my recovery as if it was two weeks ago. I have the rest of this season to think about and I want to make sure I'm in good health before I play again.
In fact, if this wasn't the Masters, I'm sure I wouldn't be playing. I'd probably be another two weeks away from teeing it up, but this is an important tournament and I love playing here.
While I haven't been able to take any big swings over the past two weeks, the good news is that I have spent a lot of time working on my short game - that was all I could do! Of course a good short game is invaluable around here so if I do play, I'll have that going for me.
The next two days will be interesting. I'm hoping to play a few holes on Tuesday and re-assess things. For now, it's one day at a time.
Thanks for your support,
